Thera-Band Academy Helps Raise Research Funds for Foundation for Physical Therapy
May 13th
Akron, Ohio – May 10, 2010 – Partnering with several physical therapy and physical therapist assistant schools in the U.S., the Thera-Band Academy supported ten continuing education seminars entitled, Beyond Bands: Evidence-Based Progression of Elastic and Proprioceptive Exercises. The workshops were used as fundraisers for students, with most of the money being donated to the Miami-Marquette Challenge for the Foundation for Physical Therapy.
“The one-day workshop was developed to help support evidence-based practice with readily available equipment like resistance bands and exercise balls, while emphasizing immediate clinical applications based on the latest research from around the world,” stated Phil Page, PhD, PT, ATC, CSCS, director of clinical education and research for the Thera-Band Academy. “We are very happy to have helped raise over $20,000 through the schools. Our partner schools did a great job in providing both education and supporting research. Over 75% of the attendees noted that the workshop ‘exceeded’ their expectations, allowing us to believe that this was a win-win situation.”
Page continued, “In addition, the program provided exposure for the Thera-Band Academy and what we do. The Academy’s web site, www.Thera-BandAcademy.com, connects healthcare professionals and consumers to the ever growing body of research, protocols and exercise.”

Study published in Physical Therapy journal on Thera-Band resistance vs. dumbbells
Apr 1st
In an Academy blog post in February, Thera-Band® resistance or dumbbells? New research supports both in the clinic, we reviewed a new research article published online in the Physical Therapy journal. The article is now available in print at the journal’s website. The landmark study showed that Thera-Band elastic resistance was as effective as dummbells at activating muscles during therapeutic exercises. In addition, the article validated the use of the Borg RPE scale in dosing the intensity of resistive exercises. For more information, read the press release here.
If you’d like to learn more about this study and other biomechanics behind elastic resistance training that will help your patient exercise prescription, attend one of our remaining “Beyond Bands” courses in Virginia or Kansas. In the course, healthcare professionals can learn the scientific and clinical application of elastic resistance and balance training.

Thera-Band Academy Supports Student Athletic Training Symposium
Mar 4th
Once again, the Thera-Band® Academy supported the 25th annual Southeastern Athletic Trainers Association (SEATA) Athletic Training Student Symposium as a Workshop Partner. Director of the Thera-Band Academy Dr. Phil Page said, “I attended one of the first SEATA Student Symposia in Birmingham, Alabama and it made a huge impression on me. I’m glad to be in a position now where I can give back to my profession where it counts the most: the students.”
This year’s meeting had just over 700 students from nine of the 10 NATA districts across the United States attending the symposium. The athletic training students represented 62 athletic training education programs (ATEPs) from 34 states.
Thera-Band resistance bands and exercise balls were utilized in a 90-minute “Core Stability Training Laboratory” session. Led by Craig Elder, PhD, ATC, CSCS from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs and also 20+ laboratory instructional faculty, the session was attended by 200+ athletic training students.
